Ryu in the original Street Fighter is a video game character created by Capcom, from the Street Fighter series. Premiering in the first Street Fighter, Ryu appears as the lead character from the game along with his best friend Ken participating in the Street Fighter tournament. Further games from the series show Ryu to be highly focused on his training, aiming to become the strongest he can. Ken made his first appearance in the original Street Fighter released in 1987. The character's name was originally spelled in Japanese as Ken, which is the kanji character for fist, Ken is described as a former sparring partner, rival and best friend of the main character, Ryu, who trained under the same master (a character whose identity would later be fleshed out as Gouken).
